"Biblical Names" Article Items

For many years, mainstream archaeology doubted the historicity of many Biblical names.  They were thought to have been largely made up by Jewish historians anxious to reclaim Israel’s past.

But the historians were wrong.  Recent archaeological discoveries have proven King David to be an actual person.  A stone inscription of his name was discovered, showing him to be an actual person.  The House of David stele was found by accident during an excavation.  A trained archaeologist noticed the rock as it had inscriptions on it—these inscriptions in written in Aramaic by Hazael, an ancient enemy of Israel.

Many other Biblical names have been uncovered in recent decades, supporting the Biblical narrative.  These include coins, bullae (clay stamps used by influential people to seal documents), and other stone inscriptions.

The importance of substantiating David’s existence can hardly be overstated, as Christ’s “throne of David” is now occupied.

Another bulla has been found – this one is a bulla of Azariah from Old Testament. Azariah was the son of the High Priest Hilkiah who has an important role in ancient Israel. Israel, as per its usual history, had once again fallen from following God and judgment would soon be pronounced upon it. Josiah was the King at the time and was apparently unaware of what he was supposed to be doing. The Kingdom had fallen so far away that they were worshiping pagan gods, idols, and sacrificing their children. Hilkiah was the High Priest under King Josiah and… Read More »

Ruth

Ruth is an ancient story about a kindman-redeemer named Boaz. He would marry Ruth and would become an ancestor of Christ.

Ruth is a small book buried in the Old Testament. It consists of only about 2500 words but it conveys a great picture of a redeemer.  As part of the redeemer image, Ruth was adopted into the lineage of the great redeemer, Christ. This book is particularly useful for those without a Jewish understanding of the Torah.  While Christians understand the notion of a redeemer in the context of Christ’s sacrifice for us, they only have a vague understanding of what it meant to be a “redeemer” in ancient Jewish law. The story uses these Jewish principles with Boaz accepting… Read More »

King David’s Palace

The discovery of King David’s palace continues a string of recent archaeological discoveries confirming the Biblical narrative. The existence of a historical King David has been doubted for decades by liberal scholars. They argued at best David was a regional warlord with little in the way of regional stature. They argued his battles are myth made up by a people desperate to describe a glorious past. In reality, their whole history was largely a fable and totally made up. Recent archaeological discoveries have rewritten history. The King David stone illustrates his name prominently placed among other important kings of the… Read More »

Copper Mines in Israel

Copper mines were utilized by ancient Israel during the time of King Solomon; this copper was used to make bronze utensils for the Temple. This substantiates the historicity of the Biblical account.

Archaeologists discovered the vast wealth of Biblical King Solomon partially derived from his copper mines.  He is recognized as having been one of the richest people to have ever lived.  Other countries paid Solomon about 25 tons of gold for each of the 39 years of his reign.  This money went into building projects throughout the realm but especially in Jerusalem. His estimated fortune is estimated to have been around $2 trillion in today’s currency. That would be much more than J.D. Rockefeller who had a peak net worth of a paltry $367 billion. And yet, there are many who… Read More »

Archaeologists discovered evidence for an aide to Biblical King Josiah in recent explorations in Israel. Archaeology has come a long way over the past few decades since proving the existence of Biblical King David in 1993. It seems every year there are new findings of ancient artifacts proving the existence of Biblical characters thought until now to be largely fictional. Some of these have been dug up in the Sifting Project which examines dirt illegally excavated from the Temple Mount and discarded. Others are excavated from mounts of dirt scattered Israel and surrounding countries which have never been explored. Even… Read More »

Finding the House of David Stele was important as the existence of an actual, Biblical King David had been called into question for centuries and was considered only a myth by secular historians. They scoffed at the idea there could have been an organized, ancient kingdom of Israel that could be powerful enough to fight against ancient civilizations. Furthermore, the Biblical Kingdom of David was associated with other ethnic groups which were also thought to be mythical – or at least severely enlarged in order to fit the narrative. This becomes important because the Old Testament is very consistent with… Read More »

The Sennacherib Prism is an ancient hexagonal clay artifact with multiple lines of cuneiform writing. It contains the writing of the Assyrian King Sennacherib concerning his exploits in and around Jerusalem in 701 BC during the reign of Biblical King Hezekiah. These inscriptions were inscribed on several three known prisms stored in various museums around the world. The Taylor Prism is in the British Museum, the Oriental Institute prism is stored in the Oriental Institute of Chicago, and the Jerusalem Prism is in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The inscriptions are nearly identical to each other with only minor differences…. Read More »

The Pool of Siloam

Jerusalem has been conquered many times through history; in this blog it was conquered in 586 BC by the Babylonians who destroyed the city and Temple.

The Pool of Siloam was a tremendous archaeological finding because of its association with Scripture. It was at that pool that Christ cured the blind man (John 9:1-11). The pool has been associated throughout history as being associated with Hezekiah’s Tunnel. The tunnel traditionally was built by King Hezekiah (739 – 686 BC), the thirteenth King of Judah. Hezekiah witnessed the destruction of the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BC when he was a child. The destruction of much of the Jewish nation (leaving only two tribes of Judah and Benjamin) left a lasting impression on the young child…. Read More »

Did Jesus Really Exist?

I have had discussions with many people online over the years who challenge the very existence of Christ. They often question, “did Jesus really exist?”  Skeptics suggest there would be more evidence of his existence were he really the Son of God who did miracles. These skeptics believe there is no good evidence for Christ outside the Bible, and of course, the Bible cannot verify itself. Even though Christ’s existence is recognized by billions of Christians and Muslims, these skeptics doubt the evidence. Is this a realistic objection? Is this objection based in fact or is there sufficient evidence of… Read More »

The ancient kingdom of Edom and Israel have a shared history according to Scripture.  The relationship between Biblical Jacob (whose name was changed to Israel and who became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel) and Esau (the brother of Jacob who became the father of the nation of Edom) is legendary.  They were twins and seemingly even struggled prior to birth concerning which would be born first. Esau won the birth battle and was born minutes prior to Jacob.  Being first-born, Esau had the birthright as the eldest son and would get a greater portion of an inheritance… Read More »
