The age of white dwarf stars is one of the best ways to help determine the age of the universe.  We took a brief look at how this is done. But to really understand how this is done, it is necessary to take a deep dive into what a white dwarf star really is, how they form, how they cool off, how all white dwarfs are nearly identical, and how they are able to determine the age of the universe. White dwarf stars are the dead remnants of old stars that are no longer burning nuclear fuel; they are still… Read More »

The existence of the Big Bang has been confirmed through multiple independent mechanisms to have occurred about 13.78 billion years ago.  We can even measure the left-over temperature from the Big Bang in empty space. Two of the greatest discoveries made in cosmology during the twentieth century were that the universe is flat (space is not curved), and the cosmological constant (space is now expanding at an ever-accelerating rate).  These are important because they both imply that the universe had a beginning – that it is not eternal. Space and time were both created at the big bang event and… Read More »

There is Not a Chance the universe could have been created without an intelligent designer.  The more we have learned about the universe and about physics in general, the more we have come to understand the complexity of science.  But even more importantly, we have also come to understand how the physical constants of nature are required to be the values they are in a very precise manner, even though they do not have to be that value at all. One of the physical constants – the cosmological constant – is one of the most precisely tuned constants required for… Read More »

COBE Finds the Big Bang The COBE satellite was able to find hard evidence for the occurrence of the Big Bang.  Further study would make this event one of the best understood and best-documented events in the history of the universe. One of the greatest discoveries of the twentieth century was the cosmic background radiation and what it means.  The background radiation comes to earth from all directions equally and is nearly exactly the same (isotopy) in all directions as well.  The existence and characteristics of this radiation were predicted decades before its initial characterization in 1992, but the importance… Read More »

King Hezekiah’s stamp was found in an archaeological excavation and has been confirmed to belong to the ancient Jewish king.  It is a clay seal otherwise known as a “bulla” that was discovered in the Ophel excavation at the southern wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The bulla itself is tiny, measuring only about a centimeter in diameter, bearing a seal impression showing a two-winged sun disk blanked by symbols including an Egyptian ankh.  The bulla bears the Hebrew inscription translated as “Belonging to Hezekiah, (son of) Ahaz, king of Judah.” In the ancient world, bullae were used to… Read More »

The seal of Prophet Isaiah shows the historicity of one of the most important prophets in the Hebrew Bible.  He foretold Christ’s birth and many aspects of his ministry. One of the most exciting archaeological discoveries in recent years concerns the recovery of an 8th century BC seal impression discovered in the First Temple remains near Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.  Hebrew University archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar notes, We appear to have discovered a seal impression, which may belong to the prophet Isaiah, in a scientific, archaeological excavation. The discovery was made at an excavation site called the “Ophel” which is located… Read More »

The Pontius Pilate Stone The historicity of Pontius Pilate had been doubted until the actual finding of the Pontius Pilate Stone.  Pontius Pilate is one of the most hated villains in Scripture – he was the Roman government official who sentenced Christ to death.  This stone adds further credence to his historicity along with other findings such as the Pontius Pilate ring and the unearthing of a street that he had built in Jerusalem. The advance of archaeology has brought further recognition of the historicity of many Biblical characters. Pontius Pilate was one of the most pivotal figures in the… Read More »
