"Biblical Names" Article Items

For many years, mainstream archaeology doubted the historicity of many Biblical names.  They were thought to have been largely made up by Jewish historians anxious to reclaim Israel’s past.

But the historians were wrong.  Recent archaeological discoveries have proven King David to be an actual person.  A stone inscription of his name was discovered, showing him to be an actual person.  The House of David stele was found by accident during an excavation.  A trained archaeologist noticed the rock as it had inscriptions on it—these inscriptions in written in Aramaic by Hazael, an ancient enemy of Israel.

Many other Biblical names have been uncovered in recent decades, supporting the Biblical narrative.  These include coins, bullae (clay stamps used by influential people to seal documents), and other stone inscriptions.

The importance of substantiating David’s existence can hardly be overstated, as Christ’s “throne of David” is now occupied.

When Did Herod the Great Die – The Eclipse and The Eagle The death date of Herod the Great is important because we know Herod was alive when Christ was born. Therefore, knowing Herod the Great’s death date will help determine the birth year of Christ. Ultimately, the death date depends upon understanding astronomy because it provides the data necessary to pinpoint the dates ascribed by Josephus.  Modern astronomy can determine the exact dates of many astronomical events such as lunar eclipses due to the orderly m movement of planets and their moons.  There is a historical event described by… Read More »

There are many villains in world history but few as despicable as Herod the Great.   Herod played a pivotal role in the early life of Christ as Herod desperately tried – but ultimately failed – to kill the newborn King of the Jews. Scriptures depict King Herod as conniving and ruthless, struggling to maintain his power while ruthlessly subduing the Jewish population of Israel.  He would stop at nothing to ensure his power, including killing his own children. Herod killed children less than two years old living in Bethlehem when he heard that the Messiah had been born there from… Read More »

Quick Facts: Ancient rabbinical literature confirms the historicity of Christ This literature is supplemented by other secular sources There is no reason to doubt the existence of Christ in ancient Israel. Ancient rabbinical references to Jesus confirm the historicity of Christ in addition to secular sources.  Another blog referenced some secular references to Christ, while this blog evaluates extra-Biblical rabbinical references. Rabbis often comment critically on Scripture passages in the Old and New Testaments.  These comments provide a historical evaluation of Jewish thought on various issues for the past several millennia.  This is not a particularly easy field to study,… Read More »

I have discussed several ancient secular references to Jesus in another post evaluating the historicity of Scripture from a broad perspective.  In this article, I am going to concentrate on the evidence substantiating the historicity of Christ. The historicity of Christ is after all the most important question that must be answered regarding all of Scripture for as Paul said, if the Resurrection of Christ did not happen, then Christians are deluded and above all to be pitied.  If Christ did not exist, then neither did the Resurrection. I am only going to evaluate secular, extra-Biblical sources for the historicity… Read More »

The Three Doomed Cities

The gospel is told in the stars in the constellations of the zodiac. These constellations are ancient in origin but many of the original names are Hebrew..

There are three doomed cities pronounced by Christ in the New Testament.  These particular cities had seen more miraculous events and the personal teaching of Christ for years, and yet they failed to understand.  They could not see the meaning of what was right before their eyes. Many readers are familiar with Christ’s pronouncement against Jerusalem, For the days shall come upon you when your enemies will throw up a bank before your, and surround you, and hem you in on every side, and will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave… Read More »

The historical reliability of the gospels offers another means for determining their historicity.   There are two means for determining the authenticity of any  historical account. The first is the most obvious; does the historical account have events that can be corroborated by multiple accounts.  This becomes progressively more difficult as the historical account becomes more remote.  Sometimes corroborating accounts become lost to history due to their loss or destruction.  Think for example of all the historical accounts that were lost during the destruction of the ancient Alexandria papyrus library. The second means for determining the reliability of an ancient historical… Read More »

One of the most remarkable – and controversial – news stories out of Israel concerns the renowned Ultra-Orthodox teacher of Israel – Yitzhak Kaduri. He was apparently a remarkable man revered by Jews all throughout Israel as a man of God and was a rabbi’s rabbi. He was born on July 9, 1898, in Baghdad as Yitzhak Diba who studied the Torah and the Kaballah, and was considered very intelligent.  He memorized much of the Scriptures and texts and was able to give advice to those who would ask. Everybody who knew the rabbi recognized him as a great man… Read More »

Scripture is like no other book; it tells the story of mankind from the beginning of time to the end of time. It does so with an authority not seen in other books because its inspiration comes from someone who knows everything. it was written by many people over hundreds of years, but its inspiration comes from the Creator of the universe.  The Creator provides the history of the universe in broad terms so that we might understand our place in the universe and the reason why we walk the earth. Modern science tells us the universe consists of multiple… Read More »

The Labayu letters are important in establishing the historicity of the Old Testament – especially some of its most contested parts.  There are 382 preserved letters from the Egyptian city of Amara.  About 150 of these letters were written from Canaan to the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep at around 1400 BC. Three of these letters were written by Labayu who was the king of Shechem while several others were written by other local rulers accusing Labayu of being an ally of the hated Habiru. The Habiru was an ancient designation of a people who first appeared in the 18th century BC… Read More »
