"Archaeology" Article Items

Archaeology has affirmed much of the ancient history of Israel.  This includes

the existence of Sodom,
the historicity of the ancient Jewish kings,
the existence of ancient Jews in Israel,
the likely place of Mt. Sinai and the place of the Red Sea Crossing,
the wars of the Canaan Conquest,
the likely Pharaoh who chased Moses to the Red Sea,
and much more.

The last few decades have seen an explosion in the number of archaeological findings throughout Israel.   These findings confirm the Biblical narrative and have rewritten history.  For example, many archaeologists doubted the very existence of the Hittites, claiming it was all fictional.  Then, the Hittite civilization was uncovered through modern archaeology, supporting the Biblical narrative.

Many confirmatory archaeological findings have been made through the Sifting Project.  This project uses help from civilians to sift through a vast amount of rubble that was illegally removed and discarded from the Temple Mount.

The David and Goliath Story

Christians have a greater chance of success - however that may be defined.

The David and Goliath story is one of the best-known passages in Scripture.  In this story, a 17-year-old shepherd boy comes to a battlefield where two opposing armies are camped. The Israelites are facing off with the Philistines, and there is a champion from the Philistines shouting at the Jews. The Philistines are suggesting they have a one-off; a fight between two champions to decide the fate of each nation. The fight would be to the death, but only one person would have to die rather than hundreds from each side. It seemed like a good idea – at least… Read More »

Liberal scholarship over the past century placed doubt on whether the ancient Jewish kings such as Ahab in the Bible really existed. Many believe they were just myths perpetuated by Jewish writers centuries later in order to promote a glorious past history. Fortunately for those promoting the accuracy of the Bible, such scholarship is being proven wrong with each passing year. We now have firm archaeological evidence for the existence of King David, Isaiah, Josiah, Jeremiah, among many other Biblical characters. The historicity of the Biblical narrative is being demonstrated every day with new findings from the archaeological field. Not… Read More »

In one of the more interesting passages in Scripture, there are two disciples of early Christianity walking on the road to Emmaus shortly after the crucifixion of Christ. They were discussing the amazing events of the past few days including the trial and execution of their leader. The story occurs in the Gospel of Luke and gives one of the disciples the name of Cleopas. While walking on the road, they met another person apparently walking the same road whom they did not recognize. These disciples discussed how grief-stricken they were as the ministry of Christ had apparently ended so… Read More »

Bulla Affirm the Bible

Ancient seals worn as a ring would be pressed into wet clay which would identify the owner of a legal document. Seals from ancient Israel are being identified which support the Biblical narrative.

Most Christians are not familiar with the ancient Jewish legal and so are unfamiliar with a bulla and how the bulla affirm the Bible. Many Scripture characters were important people in their time and produced bulla during their lifetimes. Today, we have legal contracts where a signature is confirmed by a notary public or other means. This was not possible in ancient Israel. Bible bulla are clumps of dried clay into which a carved stone seal was impressed. The impression often had both writings identifying the owners of the seal, and images. These images might reflect the national state if… Read More »

Another bulla has been found – this one is a bulla of Azariah from Old Testament. Azariah was the son of the High Priest Hilkiah who has an important role in ancient Israel. Israel, as per its usual history, had once again fallen from following God and judgment would soon be pronounced upon it. Josiah was the King at the time and was apparently unaware of what he was supposed to be doing. The Kingdom had fallen so far away that they were worshiping pagan gods, idols, and sacrificing their children. Hilkiah was the High Priest under King Josiah and… Read More »

Ruth

Ruth is an ancient story about a kindman-redeemer named Boaz. He would marry Ruth and would become an ancestor of Christ.

Ruth is a small book buried in the Old Testament. It consists of only about 2500 words but it conveys a great picture of a redeemer.  As part of the redeemer image, Ruth was adopted into the lineage of the great redeemer, Christ. This book is particularly useful for those without a Jewish understanding of the Torah.  While Christians understand the notion of a redeemer in the context of Christ’s sacrifice for us, they only have a vague understanding of what it meant to be a “redeemer” in ancient Jewish law. The story uses these Jewish principles with Boaz accepting… Read More »

The discovery of King David’s palace continues a string of recent archaeological discoveries confirming the Biblical narrative. The existence of a historical King David has been doubted for decades by liberal scholars. They argued at best David was a regional warlord with little in the way of regional stature. They argued his battles are myth made up by a people desperate to describe a glorious past. In reality, their whole history was largely a fable and totally made up. Recent archaeological discoveries have rewritten history. The King David stone illustrates his name prominently placed among other important kings of the… Read More »

Copper Mines in Israel

Copper mines were utilized by ancient Israel during the time of King Solomon; this copper was used to make bronze utensils for the Temple. This substantiates the historicity of the Biblical account.

Archaeologists discovered the vast wealth of Biblical King Solomon partially derived from his copper mines.  He is recognized as having been one of the richest people to have ever lived.  Other countries paid Solomon about 25 tons of gold for each of the 39 years of his reign.  This money went into building projects throughout the realm but especially in Jerusalem. His estimated fortune is estimated to have been around $2 trillion in today’s currency. That would be much more than J.D. Rockefeller who had a peak net worth of a paltry $367 billion. And yet, there are many who… Read More »

The Sifting Project attempts to locate ancient artifacts in discarded debris from the Temple Mount from 1999.  At that time, access construction into an underground structure removed thousands of tons of sensitive debris. Historical Importance There has long been controversy about whether Scripture portrays an accurate representation of actual history.  Skeptics question whether any of the characters actually lived.  They also question whether many of the civilizations in Scripture actually existed. Organizations within the United Nations have even questions whether there is a legitimate history of Jews in Palestine. Recent history makes this determination much more important. Arguments question whether… Read More »

Archaeologists discovered evidence for an aide to Biblical King Josiah in recent explorations in Israel. Archaeology has come a long way over the past few decades since proving the existence of Biblical King David in 1993. It seems every year there are new findings of ancient artifacts proving the existence of Biblical characters thought until now to be largely fictional. Some of these have been dug up in the Sifting Project which examines dirt illegally excavated from the Temple Mount and discarded. Others are excavated from mounts of dirt scattered Israel and surrounding countries which have never been explored. Even… Read More »
